BFWG holds a Research Presentations Day each year at which women postgraduate students are invited to give short presentations of their research work to a general audience. A prize of £100 is offered for the presentation judged ‘best’ in terms of quality of presentation and ability to communicate the subject to an educated but general audience. Those interested in making a presentation should go to www.bfwg.org.uk to download an abstract submission form. Abstracts should be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Closing date for abstracts is Friday April 28th 2017
It may be necessary to make a selection from abstracts submitted if there are too many entries for the time available. Please note: BFWG is not able to pay travel or other expenses.
All undergraduates, postgraduates, members of BFWG and others who are interested will be very welcome to attend the RPD even if they do not wish to submit a paper. There is no charge for bona fide students, whether or not they are presenting a paper, but there is a charge of £10 on the door for others. (A sandwich lunch is provided). The Research Presentations Day is usually a good opportunity to meet other postgraduate women students and to look objectively at the presentation styles of others. It can be a useful learning experience and an opportunity for networking.

Research for All is a new open-access journal focusing on research that involves universities and communities, services or industries working together.
Engagement with research goes further than participation in it. Engaged individuals and communities initiate research, advise, challenge or collaborate with researchers. Their involvement is always active and they have a crucial influence on the conduct of the research.
Research for All is a peer-reviewed journal focusing on research that involves universities and communities, services or industries working together. Contributors and readers are from both inside and outside of higher education. They include researchers, policymakers, managers, practitioners, community-based organizations, schools, businesses and the intermediaries who bring these people together. The journal highlights the potential in active public engagement for robust academic study, for the development of involved communities, and for the impact of research. It explores engagement with different groups and their cultures, and features theoretical and empirical analysis alongside authoritative commentary to explore a range of themes that are key to engaged research including the development of reciprocal relationships, sector-specific communication and participatory action research. The journal is co-sponsored by the UCL Institute of Education and the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement.

E-mporium, the University of Lincoln’s new interdisciplinary E-journal of postgraduate research, is now seeking submissions for its first issue.
As E-mporium is interdisciplinary in nature, we will be looking to showcase the best in postgraduate research and invite contributions from postgraduate students across the spectrum of disciplines at both Masters and Doctoral level. As part of its commitment to enhancing the postgraduate experience, the Graduate School is creating a new Open Access E-journal for postgraduate research.
E-mporium is an interdisciplinary journal, committed to facilitating interdepartmental exchange and encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to contemporary debates. Our mission is to provide a publishing platform that raises the profile of postgraduate research at the University of Lincoln and also provides students with experience in the peer-review publishing process.
Whilst much academic writing, including the PhD itself, is associated with long pieces of work comprising many thousands of words, there is value in being able to complement this skill with writing in a more concise form. This ability is required in preparing abstracts. These provide a concise overview of a larger study. Whilst they often accompany articles, abstracts are increasingly used in the selection of conference and seminar papers. Consequently, there is much value in being able to master the skill of writing abstracts.
How do you initiate the writing process when faced with only a blank page? Effective written communication is an essential part of academia and researchers have to write a variety of documents including proposals, theses, papers for publication, grant proposals and books. Every writing project involves planning, setting deadlines and collaborative writing and must be written in a clear and concise manner that is appropriate for that particular style of document.
